Graffiti Removal
Envo Facilities was appointed to remove extensive graffiti from the Northumbrian Water treatment plant building located on the Fenham site. Due to the facility's proximity to an active pumping station, the work required sensitive and environmentally controlled cleaning methods to avoid contamination of groundwater and operational equipment. The cleaning programme was carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with strict site protocols.
The Challenge
- ▸ Remove graffiti from front and rear brick elevations of the treatment plant building.
- ▸ Ensure no chemical runoff or groundwater contamination at the pumping station.
- ▸ Work at height using portable scaffolding where needed.
- ▸ Carry out works safely with exclusion zones and correct PPE.
- ▸ Complete the works within one working day.
Our Approach
Environmental Protection
Because the building sits directly on a Northumbrian Water pumping station, no chemicals were used. All removal techniques were selected to prevent paint flakes or contaminated residue entering site drainage or groundwater systems. Protective sheeting was used to catch debris, and all waste was removed from site responsibly.
Graffiti Removal Method
The team used a high-pressure water-fed hose system with sharp sand additive to break down and lift the graffiti from the brick surfaces. Traditional hand tools — including scrapers, pads, and extension poles — were applied where needed for more stubborn painted areas. No chemical agents were used at any stage.
Safe Access & Site Controls
Portable scaffolding was deployed to access upper elevations, while exclusion zones were set up to prevent pedestrian or vehicle interference. Operators wore full PPE including hi-viz, gloves, safety footwear, hard hats, and hearing protection. Work equipment was secured to prevent falling-object risks.
Third-Party & Site Safety
All works were carried out during low-traffic periods, ensuring no risk to the public or NWL staff. Warning signage, cones, and barrier tape were used to secure the area while operations were underway.
Results Delivered
- Graffiti successfully removed from all elevations, restoring the brickwork appearance.
- No chemicals, spills, or contamination — fully compliant with pumping-station restrictions.
- All work completed safely within the planned one-day window.
- Improved aesthetic condition of the treatment building and adjacent structures.
Our Environmental Commitment
As part of the Envo approach, all materials were handled responsibly and waste was recycled where possible. We minimised disruption to the facility and worked in accordance with all environmental and sustainability guidelines.
